Obituary for Wava Maxine Oser (Kirkendall)

On February 18, 2024, Wava, an avid sewer and quilter, began creating her angel wings in Heaven.

She was born on September 3, 1942, at home in Lenawee County, MI, to Lewis P. and Bertha S. (Miller) Kirkendall. She graduated from Waldron Area High School (MI), where she played varsity basketball.

Wava married Richard Oser, of Fort Wayne, IN, on April 20, 1970. She never remarried upon his death in May 2002, staying busy with quilting, sewing, reading, traveling, and playing Bingo. She did not let Covid stop her as she exclaimed, “I only have a few hours left to live. I’m not living them in my basement.” Off she went! Wava especially loved Alaska where she spent several weeks in September 2023. She also traveled to much of the United States, and visited Canada, Spain, Italy, France, and Iceland with friends and family. She attended many food service conventions and quilt shows/retreats. Wava won several awards for her projects. She frequented Derby Dinner Playhouse, relished cooking and decorating cakes for family and friends, and delighted in sewing the names and patches on the jump suits for the Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS Hazmat team members. Wava volunteered for many years with the St. Joseph Orphanage Sewing Group in Louisville, KY where she lovingly spent hours upon hours with her friends, creating quilts for the children.

One of her greatest joys was her grandchildren: Austin, Melissa, Sean, Elizabeth, and Garrett. She often traveled to see Austin and Melissa in Washington State. She took several Caribbean cruises and many camping trips with Sean and Elizabeth, locally in KY and IN, out West, and to the New England states.

Before moving to Louisville, KY with Richard in 1974, she lived in Fort Wayne, IN and prior to IN, she worked for Bob Evans Farm Inc. in Hillsdale, MI where, Wava always reminded us, she bought her Cutco knives from Bob Evan’s son. In Louisville, she served as the Middletown Elementary School food service manager (JCPS) before retiring from Anchorage Public Schools in Anchorage, KY, as their Director of Food Service in May 2005.

Wava is survived by her sons, Dan (Emily), Brad (Wendy), David, and Dale. She leaves 5 grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Wava is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Oser, and all of her brothers, Lewis, Don, Dale, Rolland Kirkendall, and sister, Pauline Alpaugh.

Visitation will be 2-8 P.M., Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville, KY 40205. A private commitment ceremony will be held the next day at Cave Hill Cemetery.

If desired, and in lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Wava’s name to the St. Joseph Children’s Home Sewing Group, 2823 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206.
