Obituary for Wilton Wesley Murphy

Dr. Wilton W. Murphy, 89, passed away peacefully after a brief period in the hospital on Friday, May 5, 2023. Wilton was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, the son of Dr. & Mrs. C. J. Murphy. He was active in sports in the city and earned the Eagle Scout and God and Country awards in scouting. He received his B.A. and M.A. with Distinction in Psychology at the University of Missouri where he met his now deceased and beloved wife, Karen Schultz, while in Columbia MO where she graduated from Stephens College. In 1958 he moved to Michigan where he and Karen were married and he completed his Ph.D. and then post-doctoral work in Pyschology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Murphy worked for the General Electric Co. in various management/consulting positions in different locations for 23 years. During one nine-year period he managed the planning and evaluation of crew performance during the Apollo space flights and the lunar landings. Dr. Murphy received the NASA Apolloneer award for outstanding contributions to America’s space program. During this time he also served as an adjunct professor in the graduate school at the University of Florida. After leaving GE in 1985 he became a Principal partner in the Mercer Human Resources Consulting firm with worldwide offices. In 1994 he started his own international Human Resources Management consulting firm, W.W. Murphy & Associates, with 12 associates located in five cities in the U.S. where he worked until retirement at 71. Wilton and Karen spent their summers at their family lake home in northern Michigan where they had their annual family reunions with their three children and families. Wilton and Karen travelled extensively over their 53 years of marriage, touring over 96 countries on all seven continents. Dr. Murphy published articles in several professional journals, was a member of the American Psychology Association, Psi Chi – a national honorary psychology society, and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the University of Missouri. He also taught at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Henry Ford Hospital in a consulting capacity. He is survived by his two children Brian (Monica), in Buffalo NY, Kristin Sydnor (Gary) in Siler City NC, four grandchildren (Blair, Evan, Jessica, Miranda) and his companion, Joann Jung after the death of his beloved wife, and death of his son Brent (Nichole) in Atlanta GA. A private celebration of his life will be held by family members. Memorial gifts should be sent to the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Society.
