Obituary for Ellen Rose Nash

NASH, Ellen Rose Flaherty, 87, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2015. She was surrounded by her family who loved her.

She was born on September 9, 1927 and was a proud graduate of Presentation High School.

Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Joseph E. Nash.

She is survived by her 7 children, Dennis Nash (Teresa), Carol Rush (Carl), Joe Nash (Karen), Fran Hartell (Ken), Susan Nash, John Nash, and David Nash (Marilyn). Ellen loved and was loved by 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sweet sister Mary Helen Randol and her good and faithful friend of 74 years, Mary Lou Craven.

Our mother valued education. She bought encyclopedias, read to her children, and made sure our neighborhood had a book mobile. We visited the main library downtown with our sack lunches as she introduced us to Alcott, Frost and her favorite read aloud, Edgar Allen Poe.

Our mother valued her faith. She lived her faith through prayer and ministry. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was actively involved in caring for the elderly and delivering communion to the residents of Rockford Manor Nursing Home. She also lived her faith through the power of being an excellent listener to family, friends and often times complete strangers.

Above all else, our mother was kind. She spoke well of others and expected her children to do the same. She would laugh when others complimented her on her children, saying “God raised them”. Our mother valued her family.

As we mourn our loss and celebrate the life of our mother, we take comfort in knowing our God holds her now perfect hands in His own, sees His reflection in her beautiful blue eyes and is joyfully singing “well done, my good and faithful servant”.

Ellen’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at St. Leonard Catholic Church, 440 Zorn Avenue, with burial to follow in St. Michael Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm on Monday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.

Gratitude to our God for taking her home so easily and gratitude to our friends from the Nazareth Home who lovingly cared for our mother.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Nazareth Home or Shively Area Ministries.
