Obituary for Emilia Veronica Bissmeyer (Borkin)

BISSMEYER, Emilia Veronica”Ame”, 95, of Louisville, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Seneca Place.

Born in Jersey City, the former Emilia Borkin was a first generation American born to Frank and Rosalie Borkin, and went to grade school at St. Anthony’s, high school at Immaculate Conception Academy in Lodi, and graduated nursing school at Medical Center in 1941. She was a WWII Army Air Corp nurse who loved America and loved being an American-she never missed voting! She volunteered teaching classes and working disasters for the American Red Cross. Emilia loved to travel, golf, paint, was a published poet, and was extremely generous with her time and money. She loved to garden and could plant a stick and make it grow. She could also give a great back scratch and always wore hats, earrings, leopard prints, butterflies, and lipstick. She was the original Macgyver and was always able to find multiple ways to use and reuse almost anything. Emilia gave unconditional love, was intelligent, very curious, had a highly developed moral compass, very strong backbone, and had strength to do it her way always with consideration for others.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Albert Joseph Bissmeyer, Jr., and 3 sisters, Anne, Stephanie and Norma.

Emilia raised and is survived by 3 children, Albert III (Sandra), Donna, and Roger (Carol); and was “Babci” to 7 grandchildren: Al, Ingrid, Eric (who predeceased her), Jessica, Donald, Rachel and Aaron; and 12 great grandchildren.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 508 Breckenridge Lane, with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5pm on Sunday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to American Red Cross or Schuhmann Center.
