Obituary for Charles Dillard Bennett

CHARLES DILLARD BENNETT, JR

Charles Bennett, 90, passed away Monday, June 27th at Suburban Hospital.

He was born February 2, 1926 in Jeffersonville, Indiana and was the son of Charles Dillard Bennett, Sr, and Leona Swartz Bennett. He was named for his father and was called "C. D" by his family, but better known as "Charlie"
or "Charles" by others. He had one sister, Sarah Frances, all of whom are now deceased.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II and served aboard the destroyer USS Charles P. Cecil.
He was proud to have joined other WW II veterans to make the Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. to see the
World War II memorial which was built in their honor.

He graduated from Jeffersonville High School in Indiana and from United Electronics School in Louisville,
KY. This opened the door to his life long career of owner of Champion TV Sales & Service, which he
operated in Louisville for over 35 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Louisville
Electronics & Technicians Association, the National Electronics Service and Dealers Association, a Xenith
Dealer, a former member of Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association and the Glendale Flying Club at Bowman
Field.

Charles was an instrument rated private pilot and with a friend owned their own plane and traveled extensively. He married Mary Lou Hess in 1989 in Hawaii and they honeymooned there. His love for flying and traveling took them to most of the United States, the Florida Keys, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada , Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. They cruised the Caribbean and enjoyed boating on Kentucky lakes and visiting both state and national parks and lodges. They found relaxation in nature with the ownership of a log house overlooking the Ohio River where they spent several leisurely years. He spent many years gardening and growing vegetables. He was inventive and crafty and could fix almost anything. He always kept busy. His interest in photography enabled him to create a large library of pictures on his computer. He derived contentment from listening to his record collection of great music which he transferred to his computer. He enjoyed watching spectator sports of golf, football and basketball games on TV. He loved his family and enjoyed outings and get-togethers with them and with friends.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife Mary Lou, 3 step-children, Karen McCauley (Don), Cynthia Edwards (Dan), and David Hess, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Also, extended family, nieces and nephews, cousins and many devoted friends. With gratitude we extend special thanks to Dr. David Overley and his staff for their compassionate care of our Dad.

Visitation will be held at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Tuesday, July 5 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday, July 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Highlands Funeral Home. Burial to follow the service at Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Donations can be made to Honor Flight Bluegrass Chapter, P.O. Box 991364, Louisville, KY 40269-1364.
