Obituary for Virginia ""Sissy"" Hower

Virginia ""Sissy"" Hower
Virginia “Sissy” Barker Hower passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. She was born in Louisville on October 16, 1934 to Elbridge Gerry Barker and Virginia Weldon Barker. Sissy is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Frank B. Hower, Jr., her parents and her brother, Elbridge Gerry Barker, IV.
Sissy is survived by her two sons, Frank Hower, III (Kris), and William Hower; two grandchildren, Erin Hoyes (Geoff) and Brooks Hower (Michele); and 3 great-granddaughters, Libby and Hadley Hoyes, and Gabriella Hower.
She was a graduate of Louisville Collegiate School and Bradford Junior College. Sissy was a long-standing member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she was on the vestry and built “Ginny’s Garden” in memory of her mother. She was a member of the Junior League and a board member of the American Red Cross, Jefferson Club, and Camp Piomingo. She was a favorite teacher at Second Presbyterian Weekday School for many years. She was a member of the Louisville Country Club, the Pendennis Club, the River Valley Club and the Jefferson Club.
Sissy lived life to the fullest and through her relationships with family and friends, a love of travel and adventure, and an irrepressible sense of humor. Her generosity and caring ways were appreciated by everyone that knew her and many that didn’t because she did so many acts of kindness quietly.
The family would like to thank the many nurses and aides that cared for Sissy at the Sam Swope Care Center. They are forever grateful for the friendship, love, and care given by Marie Dudgeon for the last six years.
A memorial service to celebrate Sissy’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2822 Frankfort Avenue at 11 A.M., Friday, April 8, 2016. A reception will follow at the Louisville Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, The American Red Cross, or a charity of choice.
