Obituary for James Allen Brownfield

James Allen Brownfield
James Allen Brownfield was born March 2, 1947 in Bowling Green, KY and passed away March 6, 2017 a few days after his 70th birthday.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carl Myers Brownfield (born in Bowling Green) and Laura Genevieve Grimes (born in Oakland, KY), and was the first of their four children. He is survived by his siblings including, Mary Walta Parrish, St. Joseph, MO, Ray Flanagan, Mt. Juliet, TN, Russell Flanagan, Mt. Juliet, Willia Brownfield Hennigan, Washington DC, Bill Brownfield, Houston, TX, and Joe Brownfield, Louisville.
Jim was raised in a large and fluid family environment and attended schools primarily in St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves and Kirkwood) as well as Cleveland Heights, OH, Parsons, KS, Elmira, NY, Bradenton, FL and London, England. After college, he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1967-1969, including a tour in Vietnam, where his principal activities consisted of building roads, dodging bullets and, like so many Vietnam vets, had both good and difficult experiences while in-country. These prepared him well for a career in medicine and he spent more than 30 years working as a physician's assistant, much of it as a surgical PA. He was calm under pressure, methodical and well suited for helping doctors put people back together. He worked as an orthopedic PA at Bowling Green Orthopedic Associates and later at Henderson Medical Center, Henderson, TN, after which he retired in Louisville in 2004.
As a boy, Jim was a natural athlete, always running somewhere, known for his speed. His entire life, he loved fast cars and winding roads, so Kentucky suited him well. As he got older and gave up golf, his passion turned to reading and history, which he enjoyed so much that he finished every heavy tome ever written by James Michener and many other authors.
We loved Jim for his kind nature and patience, we will miss him forever and we will always be grateful he was in our lives.
A Remembrance Reception will he held in Jim's honor 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville. Friends and neighbors are encouraged to stop by and share stories with Jim's family. Later that day, Jim's ashes will be interred beside his parents in both Bowling Green and Oakland, KY.
