Obituary for Alice Cleary Frantz

FRANTZ, Alice Cleary, 89, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
Alice was born on July 29, 1922 to Frank and Alice Cleary in Brooklyn, New York. She lived most of her young life in Hempstead, New York, graduating from Hempstead High School and attending New York University. During World War II, she was an accountant at Hopeman Brothers Shipbuilders. She met her husband, John Frantz, in 1942 and they were married in 1943 at Mitchell Field Chapel before he went overseas. They celebrated 68 years of marriage last October. Upon John’s retirement from the Air Force in 1959, they returned to Louisville. Alice began a teaching career in the Catholic Schools, while completing her degree from the University of Louisville. Most of her teaching career was spent at Our Lady of Consolation School. She finished her active teaching at St. Pius School. Even upon retirement, Alice was a much sought after substitute for many years. She was active in her church, the Church of the Ascension as a lector; as a volunteer making recordings for the blind; and as a member of the “Oldest Living Book Club.” She also enjoyed playing bridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Alice Cleary, and her sister, Joan Peter. Alice is survived by her loving and devoted husband, John; daughters Beth Frantz, Alice Lynn Rufo (Greg) and Kay Eileen Schedler (Bob); sister, Gloria Riesenberg; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at Church of the Ascension, 4600 Lynnbrook Drive. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday and 4-7 p.m. on Monday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Dismas Charities or the Air Force Village Retirement Home, in Shalimar, Florida.
