Barbara Ramey Spiers, 80, of Louisville passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Bobbie, as she was known to her family, was born December 31, 1937 in Mobile, Alabama to parents Francis Emmett and Bertha Mayo Ramey.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Kerry, her parents, her sister, Nita Jordan, and her son-in-law, John Harrell.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Harrell, sons, Kelly Spiers and Patrick (Martyna) Spiers, granddaughters, Hannah Harrell, Kaitlyn Toppings, and Becca Spiers, her brother, Bill (Lois) Ramey, her sister Pat (Roger) Sutliff, and the love of her life for the last ten and a half years, Larrie Sutliff, who brightened her life and was her compassionate caregiver during her illness. Also left behind to cherish her memory are her nieces, Kaye, Decca, Kit, Sharon, and Lynda, nephews, Billy, Wayne, Jim, and Paul, great-nieces and nephews, her adopted daughter, Cindy (Con) Nickell, and her adopted grandsons, Kurtis Wolf, and Quinn Nickell, Larrieā€™s children, Jeff (Debbie) Sutliff, and Regina (Tom) Braun, and grandchildren Ariana, Nichole, Alyson, and Joseph, whom she loved dearly, as well as many friends who were dear to her heart.
Bobbie was a graduate of Murphy High School in Mobile and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, where she earned her B.A. in education. She received her M.Ed. from the University of Louisville.
She taught first grade and second grade, but eventually found her calling working in special education for Jefferson County Public Schools, where she served as a powerful advocate for children with special needs.
Bobbie lived every day of her life to the fullest. She loved painting with her dear friends at Mudpies Studio, singing in the choir, worshipping and socializing with her John Knox Church family, spending time with her special retired teacher friends, singing with the Pride of Kentucky Chorus, a division of the Sweet Adelines, and spending summers with her family and extended family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and medical staff members who took care of Bobbie for their kind and caring hearts.
Her funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, at her church, John Knox Presbyterian, 9104 Westport Rd, with burial to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.
Visitation will be held on Monday, from 2:00 PM till 8:00 P.M. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
Memorial gifts made be made to the Pride of Kentucky Chorus or John Knox Presbyterian Church.
