Obituary for Beatrice Irene Mathis (Stone)

Beatrice “Bunky” Stone Mathis, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 13, 2018. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Mathis, and siblings, Jean Bocko, Alberta Campbell, James L. “Conte” Stone, Jr., and Verna “Red” Stone.
Bunky was born the youngest of five children in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Mary Powell and James L. Stone, Sr. She was a 1949 graduate of Valley High School and earned her R.N. diploma at the Kentucky Baptist School of Nursing in 1953. She worked as a surgical nurse at both the Baptist Hospital and the old Kosair Hospital on Eastern Parkway in Louisville, and served her country as an officer in the Air National Guard.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. For most of her life she was an active member of Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church, where she belonged to the Presbyterian Women and was regularly involved with community work delivering food baskets, cleaning furlough homes at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and representing her congregation in World Day of Prayer services.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan McEuen (Tom), Carrie Banahan (Tom), Laura Hensley (Terry) and step-daughter Lolita Adams (Charlie) as well as grandchildren, Jim Hensley, Sean McEuen (Jordan) Rachel Hensley and Tom Banahan IV and many, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, on Monday, June 18, 2018 between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Funeral services and celebration of her life will be held at Highlands Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. with burial immediately following at Resthaven Memorial Cemetery.
