Obituary for Burlyn Pike

PIKE, BURLYN, 89, passed away March 2, 2011 at Suburban Hospital. He was born on May 28, 1921 to Jewel and John Pike at the home of his grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Jones Pike, in Brodhead, KY. He grew up in Lebanon Junction, KY and graduated from Lebanon Junction High School. He received his law degree from the University of Louisville. He was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in September 1944 and practiced law in Shepherdsville for more than half a century, retiring in February 2004. He was a veteran of World War II, serving three years in England and France. Burlyn had many interests. He published and had an interest in several weekly newspapers in his early career. He earned his pilot's license after age 50 and flew for 30 years. He was an accomplished amateur photographer. He and Steve Masden coauthored a book, Railroad Town, A Pictorial History of Lebanon Junction. He was in the process of writing a biography of Henry Crist, an eary pioneer, businessman and politician in Bullitt County. He and his law partner, Athol Taylor, cofounded Bullitt Federal Savings and Loan in 1959. He was CEO until BFSL merged with First Federal Savings Bank in 1995. He served as director of FFSB for six years. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughter, Burnell Esbenshade (Don); his son, David; grandchildren, Matthew Lemme, Claire Lemme (Carlos Sulsona), Joshua and Christopher Pike; and great-granddaughter, Maya Sulsona. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011.
