Obituary for Dolores "Tootie" Schardein

SCHARDEIN, DOLORES A. "TOOTIE", (RIEGLING), 90, passed into God's loving grace on May 31, 2011 at Twinbrook Nursing Home.
Tootie was born in Louisville on November 13, 1920 and grew up in the Portland neighborhood. She was a graduate of Shawnee High School class of 1938. Tootie met the love of her life, Bud, at Fountaine Ferry Park Skating Rink in 1939 and they were married on January 24, 1943, just five days before Bud went off to war in North Africa and Italy. While Bud was at war, Tootie worked almost three years at the Old Seagram's Distillery. Upon his return in November 1945, Tootie became a full-time housewife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed working in her yard. Tootie was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ.
Tootie was preceded in death by her son, Robert Edward; her mother, Irene Riegling; brothers, Robert and Anthony; sisters, Jo Ann and Carol.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Herbert J. "Bud" Schardein Sr.; son, Herbert J. "Bud" Schardein, Jr. (Sandy); daughters, Linda Sue Stephenson (Steve), Janet Lee Jenkens; and sister, Jane Randall (Chuck). She is also the proud grandmother of Robert A. Schardein (Hannah), Stephanie Crossan (Michael), Ben Stephenson (Kerri), Matt Stephenson (Kristen), and Seana Phelps (Brad). She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Braden, Alexander, Sydney, Gracie and Walker.
Her family wants to express its thanks to the wonderful and caring staff of Twinbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center while she was a resident.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Kosair Children's Hospital.
