Obituary for Donald Lee Doerhoefer

DOERHOEFER, DONALD LEE, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, with his family by his side.
Don was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who will best be remembered by being a kind gentleman with a great sense of humor.
Don graduated from Manual High School in 1947 and earned a degree in ornamental horticulture from the University of Kentucky before entering the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1957. That same year he married Carol Faith Johnson. Don worked at several pharmacies, including his father's, before realizing his dream of owning his own store alongside his brother Rudy in 1966. Don quickly became regarded as the "nice one" and it remained that way throughout the 25 years that they operated the store, located at Central and Colorado Avenues in south Louisville.
In 1962, Don served as the co-chairman of the Jefferson County Academy of Pharmacy's Health and Welfare Committee. That year Don and his co-chair organized and scheduled the pharmacists of Jefferson County in the administering of thousands of polio vaccines in 46 schools in Jefferson County.
Don was a member of Middletown United Methodist Church and the Veterans Drug Club. He has also held memberships in the Jefferson County Academy of Pharmacy and the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Association.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol; sons, Bart (Kim Westermann), Brian (Leslie); daughter, Amy Harris (Scott); seven grandchildren, Tyler, Catie, Matthew and Taylor Doerhoefer and Bradley, Zachary and Ethan Harris; along with many others who knew and loved him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Rd. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Don was a participant in the memory disorder study at the University of Kentucky.
