LEWIS, Donald R. M.D., 57, of Louisville passed away on Monday January 20, 2014 at his home.
Dr. Lewis was an emergency room physician at Kosair Children’s Hospital for 27 years. He received his degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and was board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Lewis was constantly going above and beyond and his devotion was acknowledged by countless awards. He was most proud of his influence as a teacher.
In addition to his many loving friends Dr. Lewis greatly enjoyed going to movies, traveling, and music. He loved the beaches of Destin and planned to retire there; however, his greatest passion was his career.
Dr. Lewis was a member of Southeast Christian Church. His faith grew stronger as he fought his illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lewis and Marie (Hall) Lewis and his two canine babies, Sam and Maggie Mae.
He was married to Linda Ackerman Lewis, his best friend and greatest treasure. They spent 30 wonderful years together.
Left to cherish his memory is his brother, James “Mike” Lewis (Janice); sister, Patricia Lewis Nix; and niece Ashley Nix, who was like a daughter to Don and Linda along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Ashley cared for him in the last stages of his life as well as his devoted friends Wendy and Kerri Eklund who he loved dearly.
His funeral service will be at 11 am on Tuesday, January 28th at Southeast Christian Church with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 – 8 pm and on Monday from 5 – 8 pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Shamrock Foundation or Center for Women and Families.
