Obituary for Donald Kenneth Nuss

NUSS, Donald Kenneth, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, died on May 14, 2014 with his family by his side.
Born in Louisville on December 9, 1918, Donald attended Henry Clay Grade School and Shawnee Jr. High School, and graduated from Louisville Male High School. He also attended Bryant Stratton Business School, Long Beach, California City College and the University of Louisville.
Donald married the love of his life, Evelyn Zengel Nuss, in 1941. The two were happily married for 68 years.
Donald was a proud World War II veteran, serving as a Chief Yeoman with the 4th Special CB Battalion on Guadalcanal in the British Solomon Islands. Prior to the war, he was an amateur boxer, and was the Kentucky Lightweight Division Champion.
Donald worked for a short time for the Civilian Conservation Core at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, and also for the former Falls City Brewing Company. He spent most of his career (32 years) with the Ford Motor Company, at four different locations - the former Southwestern Parkway office, the Louisville Assembly Plant, the Long Beach California Assembly Plant (nine years) and finally, the Kentucky Truck Plant as Operations Manager.
After his retirement, Donald served for twenty-three years as a volunteer income tax coordinator for AARP.
Donald was an avid gardener, rosarian, and an extensive traveler, both domestic and foreign. He was also a sports enthusiast, and was a loyal and longtime fan of U of L Cardinal sports. Above all, Donald cherished the loving companionship of his wife and his four children. This world will be less special without him.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, David (Anne), Kevin (Merle), Sharon and Diane (Bob); grandchildren, Charles (Isabelle) and Christopher Nuss; nieces and nephews, Craig Hahn (Lana), Wayne Nuss (Sherry), Steve Werle (Pam), Paul Werle (Kathy), Rick Werle (Robin), Jeannine Hahn, Carol Fowler, Shirley Skeeters (Carl), Marilyn Shahid; and numerous great nieces and nephews, including David Werle, who encouraged Donald to participate in the Honor Flight Program.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Grace Alexander Nuss and Edmund C. Nuss; brothers, Hugh, Edmund, Samuel and Robert; sisters, Evelyn, Marjorie, and Martha.
A funeral Mass will be held in his honor at 1 pm on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, 1104 S. 6th St. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held later. Highlands Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The Nuss family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Mary Barry for providing Donald with such superb and compassionate care, especially in his later years. He was very close to Dr. Barry, and often called her “my jewel”.
Expressions of sympathy in Donald’s name may be made to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, the Wounded Warriors Project, the National Honor Flight Program, or to the charity of your choice.
“Dad, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.”-Author Unknown.
