Obituary for Dorothy Elizabeth Reed

99, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 with her family by her side. The daughter of Louis and Amelia I. Schmiedt. Dorothy was born January 16, 1911 in Louisville, Kentucky, attended Atherton High School, graduated from University of Louisville and went on to receive an advanced degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusettes. Dorothy was a social worker by profession who worked in Philidelphia and Central America. She was a member of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) a support group for soldiers abroad during WWII. After retiring, she took care of her family. Dorothy was a wonderful and caring mother,an intellectual person who lived modestly, loved food, especially chocolate, an avid U of L basketball fan and loved listening to the games on the radio. She is survived by her loving son, John C. Reed. "Mom, I am so proud of you. You are a wonderful mother. I wish your eyes could see all of the exceptional things I've always seen in you. Having you for a mother is a gift I have been thankful for everyday in my life. I will miss you terribly Mom. Thank you for everything you have done for me and for making my life meaningful and joyous. All my love!" Private services for the family were held. Memorials can be made to Kosair Charities, 982 Eastern Parkway, Louisville, KY 40217-1568.
