Obituary for Jean Kosse

Jean Kosse
Jean, 92, of Louisville, passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2018, with family by her side.

Jean graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1943, worked as a bookkeeper at Kosse & Lindle and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish. Although she lived in Louisville her entire life, she was a world traveler, always bringing back unique souvenirs and Christmas presents for her large family. This generosity and love of life touched everyone around her; she loved hosting lavish luau wedding showers, playing cards with her siblings and in-laws, spoiling her nieces and nephews as their favorite babysitter, knitting blankets for new babies, and throwing legendary Christmas Eve (and Eve Eve) parties. She also loved sports, and even at her advanced age, she would navigate her iPad and tape games on her DVR so that she would never miss a U of L, Reds, Dayton or Notre Dame game. She kept track of so many details, always sending birthday cards and remembering facts about three generations of nieces and nephews. Jean was a caregiver to her parents, an ally to her siblings, a traveling companion to her friends, and a matriarch to dozens of Kalkhofs, Ogburns, and Kosses. She was kind, generous, adventurous, and happy.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Louis C. Kosse, her brother, Bernard Kosse, sisters in law Lynn Kosse and Mary Anne Kosse, brothers in law Stanley Kalkhof and Bill Ogburn, and great great niece Avery Ogburn.

She is survived by sisters Mary Magdalene “Magan” Kalkhof and Huberta “Birdie” Ogburn, and brother Louis “Bud” Kosse.

Aunt Jean is survived by nineteen loving nieces and nephews, whom she loved as her own children: Barbara and Skip (Marirose) Kalkhof, and Martha Hartman (Mike); Doug, Denny (Kathy), Stephen (Angela), Mark (Val), Chris, Pat (Stacy), Michael (Tracy), Jeanie (John) Kallis, and Tom (Caroline) Ogburn; Greg (Teresa), Glenn (Kelley), Eric Kosse and Anna Frye (Justin); Jeff (Nancy) Kosse, Cindy (Rob) Allison, and Daphne (Kevin) Crooks. Aunt Jean also is survived by 44 great nieces and nephews and 14 great great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express thanks to Jean’s long time caregiver, Gloria Bethel, and all the other caregivers from Home Instead, as well as other neighbors and friends.

Jean’s Funeral Mass will be at noon on Monday, June 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 508 Breckenridge Lane, St. Matthews, KY 40207. Burial will follow at St. Michaels Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 – 7 PM on Sunday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Louisville, KY 40205.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Labre Indian School or Mass of the Air would be appreciated.
