Obituary for George W. Brock

BROCK, GEORGE W., 83, of Louisville, passed away peacefully at Baptist Hospital East on Thursday, February 17, 2011.
George was born in Unionville, IN on March 17, 1927 to Leonard and Dorothy Brock. He was the first of three boys. Graduating from Unionville High School early, he enlisted in 1944 in the US Navy as a machinist mate and served in the Pacific Theater for the remainder of World War II. Using the GI Bill he obtained his pilot's license and worked for Indiana Bell as a telephone lineman. George met the former Marilyn Patterson and married in 1951. He began a career in life insurance sales and retired as regional vice president for Kentucky Home Mutual Life Insurance Company.
A devout Christian, George has served the Lord as Elder and Deacon in the Church of Christ at several congregations. He loved singing hymns and had a great deep bass voice. Traveling in and out of the country, George and Marilyn loved to see new places, but enjoyed Switzerland best and returned many times. They made many lasting friendships here and abroad.
He loved to laugh and had a full, rich life. "Big George" was a wonderful father and husband and will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
George was preceded in death by his mother and father, Dorothy and Leonard Brock; and a brother, Donald Brock.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn Brock; eldest son, William Brock (Susan); daughter, Nancy Mattingly; and youngest son, George A. Brock (Marty); younger brother, David C. Brock (Marge); grandchildren, Carrie Brock, Christopher Brock (Jennifer), Jessica Allen, Jason Brock, Cory Sawyer, Amy Sawyer; great-grandchildren, Haley Causey, Hannah Johnson and Hayze Johnson; and extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2011 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 21, 2011 and also 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the funeral home.
