The Red Purse

Jennifer and I worked together at The Brown Hotel and she has been my dear friend for thirteen years. Jennifer was not an ordinary friend but my Christian friend, the most cherished of all friends. Jennifer loved to go to the "Coach Purse" outlets and get the "newest style" of purse as the seasons changed. She would get so excited and call me over to her office to show me all the new compartments and gadgets on her "new favorite" purse! I told her that I hardly ever change purses until the one I am carrying literally falls apart. Each year at Christmas we would exchange gifts with one another. One Christmas she came to my desk carrying a big bag stuffed with colorful tissue paper. She told me "hurry up, open it up" as she snickered with her adorable little giggle waiting with anticipation for me to open it. She was so excited and proud as a peacock to give me this gift. She was full of joy as you could see it all over her face and she hoped I would be as well. Now keep in mind she knows me, and I open my gifts slowly and methodologically. That wasn't cutting it with Jennifer, so on this occasion to make her happy I tore into it. I pulled out the most beautiful "Red Leather Purse" I had ever seen. The smell of the new leather was something I hadn't experienced in a long time. I was in awe and I cried and said "Jennifer why did you do this"? She replied: "You deserve a nice purse too"! You see it wasn't just about the purse but Jennifer was an excellent listener and it gave her such joy to surprise and make others happy! Knowing that my purse was old and worn she wanted to share a little of her "happy purse days" with me! The gift she received humbly that day was making "me" happy! I will be forever grateful that God brought Jennifer into my life. We shared many years and hours of memories made and I will cherish them all. I love my dear precious Jennifer and I will miss her greatly until we meet again in heaven. Thank you for letting me share a tender memory. May you always know God's love and feel his presence Bryan, Pat, Linda, Kathy and families. With all my love, Maralee
