John Michael McDonald
92; Louisville, KY
A funeral mass for John Michael McDonald, 92, of Louisville, KY, will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY, with entombment to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 2 to 8 PM at Highlands Funeral Home in Louisville, KY, and after 9:30 AM on Thursday at Nazareth Home. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 5, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Boston, MA, was a member of St. Albert the Great and St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Churches. He was a wool broker employed by Wellman Incorporated of Boston, MA, and later owned Banbury Wool Company in Danville, OH. He enjoyed spending his time playing golf, poker, bridge, studying the stock market and most recently painting. He and Ethelyn were active members of Hunting Creek Country Club for over 20 years. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a WWII Veteran of the United States Army, and a member of the 709th Military Police Battalion during WWII. He was a kind, gentle soul with a generous heart.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jane Cornett, Angie Ethridge and the staff at Nazareth Home for the wonderful care they provided to John over the last two years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Ethelyn Walton McDonald; parents, John and Margaret McDonald; siblings, Mary Lakeman, Nancy Flynn, Ellen McDonald and Harry McDonald.
He is survived by his four daughters, Joan Scott (Bill) of Jeffersonville, IN, Marcia Biagi (Robert) of Shelbyville, KY, Beth Ernst (Marty) of Louisville, KY, and Meg Berry (Bill) of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Peggy Dooley and Rosalie Killion, both from Massachusetts; nine grandchildren, Billy Scott (Elizabeth), Aaron Scott (Alanna), Lauren Scott, Shelley Biagi Warncke (David), Laura Biagi, Marty Ernst (Erin Miller - fiancé), Daniel Ernst, Molly Ernst and Jesse Berry; five great-grandchildren, June, Olive, Will and Cora Scott and Eli Warncke; and many dear friends.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Boys and Girls Haven, 2301 Goldsmith Lane, Louisville, KY 40218 or the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02108. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
