Obituary for John G. Oberst Jr.

OBERST, JOHN G. JR., 77, of Louisville, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Baptist Hospital East Palliative Unit.
John was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Church. He attended St. Xavier High School and graduated in 1951. He also attended Bellarmine College where he received a degree in business administration in 1956 and Spalding College where he received a master's degree in education in 1960. After 26 years, he retired from International Harvester as a production research analyst. He later worked for the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice as a social service clinician. He was also a long-term member of the German-American Club. John was the oldest of five brothers and he immensely enjoyed being outdoors and hunting and fishing in Kentucky and Indiana with this brothers, cousins, sons and friends. He also enjoyed the snow and frequently traveled to Vail, CO in the winter to enjoy the scenery with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John G. and Mary C. Oberst; and his son, David R. Oberst.
He is survived by his son, John Gregory Oberst (Maggie); daughter-in-law, Patricia Oberst; brothers, Dr. Charles Oberst, Mark Oberst, Conrad Oberst and Norman Oberst; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving and caring long-term companion, June Coers.
The family wishes to thank John's doctors and his nurses and assistants at Baptist Hospital East and the Palliative Unit for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to him.
The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, 1800 Newburg Road. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Friday, with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in John's name for the benefit of the James Graham Brown Center at the University of Louisville.
