Obituary for Kenton R. Hayes Sr.

Kenton Rogers Hayes, Sr. age 91 died May 30, 2018 at his home in Treyton Oak Towers.

After graduating from Male High School in 1944, Kenton briefly attended Murray State University before serving his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Following his military service he graduated from the University of Louisville in 1950. In 1954 he founded what eventually became Hayes, Utley & Hedgspeth Insurance Agency where he had a successful and rewarding career before retiring in 1988.

Kenton served on many boards including: Kentucky Baptist Hospitals, University of Louisville, University of Louisville Humana Hospital, University of Louisville Research Foundation and Michael Walter Industries. In the late 1970's, along with others, he was instrumental in envisioning and building Treyton Oak Towers in the heart of Old Louisville. He was the President and Chairman of the Board from 1980 to 2007.

At Walnut Street Baptist Church, he was a deacon for many years and served on numerous committees. He was inducted into Male High School’s Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2017, he and his wife Rhu received the Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging - Outstanding Couple Award from the University of Louisville Institute for Sustainable Health and Optimal Aging.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Rhuelma Woosley Hayes; his son, Kenton Jr. (Debbie), two daughters, Laura Hayes of Seattle, Washington and Julie Hayes Leahy of Indianapolis, Indiana (John); his brother, Charles Hayes of Hot Springs, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 10:00 in the sanctuary at Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1101 S. Third Street.. A private burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday June 1, 2018 from 3 pm to 7pm at Highland Funeral Home located at 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
