Obituary for Lawrence Edward Duddy

Lawrence Edward Duddy
Lawrence Edward Duddy

The world lost a humble, lovable jokester on May 25 when Lawrence Duddy (“Dud-Man”, L. Duddo”) passed away surrounded by family and friends. His love and humor will be greatly missed.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Jo Ann Duddy, to whom he was happily married for 56 years; children, Steve Lawrence Duddy (Janet), Suzanne Schaefer (David), and Stephanie Montano (Juan); siblings, Marie Wagner (Joe), Bud Duddy (Catherine), and Patsy Gipperich (Bob- deceased); and grandchildren, Sarah, Jenna, Andrew, Emma, Gabby, Maggie, Cameron, and Jacob. Larry had many extended family members; however, he was particularly close with the Montano family and the Deeley family.

Larry attended St. Xavier High School where he was an accomplished athlete, helping lead his basketball team to a state title in 1958 while receiving All-State honors, and entered Saint X’s “Hall Of Honors” in 2008. Larry went on to excel at Bellarmine College where he was a key component of the basketball team and graduated in 1962. He owned and operated a successful freight brokerage company named “Regency” for 25 years before retiring in 2010. Larry would be the last to mention his past successes as humility was constant in every aspect of his life.

Larry had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and practical jokes. He definitely contributed to Churchill Downs over the years, however, he had many victories and memories made as an owner in the Winner’s Circle, the Paddock, the Grandstand, and the Backside at Angel’s Barn. Larry’s kind and gentle nature oftentimes would draw in an unsuspecting victim to one of his practical jokes- rubber snakes, hand buzzers, and his most famous: Oochie Goochie, that brought belly laughs to all present. Larry coached Saint Athanasius boys’ basketball with longtime friend Eddy Berger, winning a city championship in 1978. His “coaching” continued for many years with watching and encouraging his grandkids in the stands of every gym in the Louisville area, and shouting instructions at the TV during Cardinal games. He truly was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. God hit the “Superfecta” when He called Larry home. This is true.

Visitation for Larry will be from 1-6 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 with a memorial service to follow at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
