Obituary

Martha Varner Skomsky Cooner, 95, of Louisville, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2020.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Skomsky; second husband, Hal Cooner; sons Michael and Mark Skomsky; and 8 siblings.

Martha was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania on October 17, 1924, to parents John and Lela Varner. She met and married Eugene Skomsky in Berwick, and then moved to Louisville, KY, where Gene worked at General Electric. Louisville then remained her home. After Gene’s passing, she met Hal Cooner and married. She always said that she had two wonderful men who loved her dearly.

Martha’s career started as the powder blender for Charles of the Ritz at Stewart’s Dry Goods for several years. After leaving Stewart’s, she worked in the designing rooms at Bycks, Bacon’s Department Store, Gidding-Jenny, and Emorys in Oxmoor.

She had a flair for fashion and was often referred to as a “classy” lady.

She spent the last few years at Cherokee Rehab (formerly known as Four Courts). Her family is so grateful to the staff at Cherokee Rehab, as they were so caring and loving over the years.

Martha is survived by her grandson, Tim Skomsky; daughters-in-law Ellen Skomsky and Christel Skomsky; stepson John Barron Cooner; and several nieces and nephews, including Donna Albertson, Lois Farner, and Pam Wyde, who all kept in touch with “Aunt Martha” throughout the years.

Highlands Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. There will be a private service at St. Peter’s Church in Hobby, Pennsylvania. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Louisville, KY at a later date.
