I am 50 now, so 4th grade was a long time ago. I do remember Ms. Lawler as caring teacher. She was tough, too. For some reason I decided to use my compass to carve my name in my desk...genius. I spent the weekend sanding it down and making it like new. Will never forget it.

What a wonderful lady! She had a way of making each of her students feel special. I just recently came across this photo. I felt so blessed to be able to share a field trip to Frankfort with my fourth grade daughter and “our” fourth grade teacher. My daughter and I are now both teachers…. She was an inspiration!

I taught with Mary Alice and shared many momentous occasions with her, Marie Moore, Louie and other teachers. The pictures I downloaded were from her 50th birthday celebration at my house. She was a very good teacher, very genuine, most kind and sweet lady. I am saddened by her passing and happy to have known her. God Bless her and her dear friend, Louie.

If there was ever a model of sharing joy in life and in profession, it was Mary Alice. There was never a time I remember her letting frustration get in the way of the love she showed to her students and colleagues. It was a blessing to have known her and taught with her. She left the world a better place because she lived. May we all be able to say that for our legacies.

Mary Alice taught at Our Lady of Lourdes for 40+ years. Her entire career was spent in the fourth grade, but not, as she would say “ in the same classroom. “ I met her when I was hired as the middle school teacher. She was always eager to help me in any way she could to adjust to a new school.

Mary Alice was also interested in gardening. She invited the Lourdes staff to her house for a faculty meeting. What a beautiful scene that was. She has been pruning and weeding the flower garden so that we could have a beautiful backdrop for our meeting. God showered sunlight on us that afternoon. It was a good potluck lunch and fellowship that followed.

After Mary Alice retired, she continued to dedicate herself to the Lourdes community by substituting in both the classroom and front office when needed.

Her stewardship extended to her home parish, Saint Raphael, where you would find her working in the picnic booth and greeting everybody at Sarafun meetings with donuts and pastries.

Mary Alice also loved to travel. She made it to all 50 states and to several continents.

Mary Alice, I have been touched by our friendship, and I will always cherish those memories.

May you rest in peace.
