Obituary for Mildred "Millie" Poole

POOLE, MILDRED "MILLIE" CHAPMAN, 81, passed away in peace on May 15, 2011.
She was the loving wife and business partner of the late W. Howard Poole, who passed away in 2003. With him, she owned Dizzy Whizz Restaurants and other business interests. Dizzy Whizz is nearly 65 years old.
Millie was born in Hart County, KY. After graduating high school, she moved to Louisville and worked for American Air Filter and Louisville Provision as a bookkeeper. One day she was eating at her favorite lunch spot, Dizzy Whizz Restaurant. The owner saw her, and began his quest for a date. The two were married for 47 years, and truly enjoyed the gift of life together.
Their three children are thankful for Millie as a mother who deeply loved them and who joyfully shared their many interests. Millie also somehow found time to be a homemaker extraordinaire. She enjoyed hosting parties in her home. She and her husband also loved to travel. More than this, they loved attending University of Louisville Basketball games. Millie was honored recently as one of the longest consecutive season ticket holder, of 62 years. She did not miss a game due to illness, even while she had cancer, kept us with new recruits and all the latest news. She also was an avid and talented golfer, playing several times a week.
Millie deeply appreciated her many friendships. Her children wish to thank Adie Sauer for his special friendship which brought her joy during the past six years. Millie was, as well as a friend, a mother figure to many who looked to her for guidance and support. She gladly gave it from her heart. She had a profound appreciation for her church, Harvey Browne Presbyterian, where she found a spiritual foundation for her life during her 40 years of membership.
Millie's children wish to thank the Brown Cancer Center for their compassion, professionalism, and extraordinary treatment skills. They helped Millie have a full life during the past several years.
Millie is survived by her children, Scott Poole (Susan), Vicki Poole (David Adams), Tim Poole; grandson, Justin Daniel Poole; sister, Margaret Manion; brother, Donald Chapman (Elizabeth); and niece, Kristie Doerr (Michael).
Millie and Howard had a special compassion for the less fortunate among us. A fund to give meals to impoverished children at the downtown Presbyterian Community Center was founded as a result. The family requests that, instead of flowers, memorial gifts be made to The Millie and Howard Poole Hunger Fund, c/o Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, 311 Browns Lane, Louisville KY 40207. All gifts are tax-deductible.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, 311 Browns Lane, with a reception there also. Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011.
