Obituary for Verna M. McCutchan

McCutchan, Verna Mae Witten, 92, passed into the presence of her Lord on January 11, 2011 in her home surrounded by her family.
Verna graduated from Ahrens High School where she played girls basketball and won penmanship awards. Later she studied writing at Wheaton College and English and Psychology at local universities. Verna worked as an office manager in medical offices, as a secretary to churches, and in communications for the American Red Cross.
She was a dedicated member of the Church of God where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was active in the Women’s Missionary Society. Verna was a published poet and enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing,oil painting, and leaves behind her collected work. She was a tremendous inspiration and role model to her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Edward McCutchan, parents, Jesse Thomas Witten, Sr. and Mary Louise Stuber Witten and siblings, Arthur (Lilly Bach), Margaret Corley (JB) and Jesse Thomas Witten, Jr.
Verna is survived by her daughters, Sandra Jones (James L.), Dr. Fay McCutchan, Beverly Cox; grandchildren, Sharilyn Jones Valladares (Jorge), Kimberly Martin (James), Heather Zeis Forrey and Erik Berglund (Xin). She took delight in great grandchildren, Calum “Nick” Gatlin, Hendrix Forrey, Julia and Daniel Martin, David Valladares, and Edvin Berglund. Verna is also survived by several nieces, nephews and their children. Thanks to her companions for their loving care.
Her service will be at 12:30 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2011 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm, Thursday and Friday from 11:30 am until service time at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in Verna’s memory to Larchmont Church of God or Hosparus of Louisville.
