95, passed away in Louisville, Kentucky on June 30, 2018.

He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on April 12, 1923 to Amelia Bertha Sheer and Frederick Montfort. He loved golf and at age 12 began working as a caddy at Audubon Country Club, he was graduated from Louisville Male High School and upon graduating he joined the World War II (WWII) effort.

In WWII, he served under General Patton in the Third Army, landing D-Day plus 5 serving wounded soldiers on the front lines until Germany’s surrender. He chose to carry a medics pack instead of a gun because of his deep religious and moral convictions.

After returning home from WWII he fell in love with Agnes Rose Harrison “Aggie”, they were married on October 14, 1945 and enjoyed a 70 year marriage full of adventure. They were blessed with two children Fred and Linda. Aggie and Bill had a home full of love for each other, it was a true love story. Bill was a loving father coaching Fred’s baseball team and doting on Linda. Family was the most important thing to him.

After the war he began a career with the L&N railroad as a switchman and finished his railroad career as a conductor, he also enjoyed working a second job at Churchill Downs as a Pari Mutuel Teller for 37 years.

His faith, his service to others and his church were always central to his life. He completed his Sunday school training course through the Southern Baptist Seminary and served as a Sunday School Teacher at Green Acres Baptist Church. He also served as a Deacon at East Audubon Baptist Church and as an Usher and doing volunteer work for the Family Life Center at Southeast Christian Church. Most recently he was a member of Fern Creek Baptist Church. He also volunteered for many organizations around the city including Meals on Wheels and Kentucky Harvest.

Bill, Dad, Bill, Poppaw was one of the most kind, loving, caring souls on the planet. He enjoyed playing golf from the age of 10 until he was 85 years old, fishing, dancing, traveling, volunteer work and enjoyed being with his family playing games and going on picnics. He taught his family many lessons in integrity, hard work and to love your neighbors as yourself.

He is survived by his son, Frederick Montfort (Debbie Fox) and his granddaughters, Laura Benson Jones (Michael), Stacie Linn, Amanda Benson DeHart (Mac), Tamara Hoagland (John), and Trisha Finnegan, great-grandchildren, Foster Linn, Asher Linn, Brielle Hoagland, Henry Putney, Afton Putney, Will DeHart, Stuart DeHart, William Jones, Gunnar DeHart and he was lovingly cared for by family members Chris Benson, son-in-law Stuart Benson and niece Eileen Deren. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Agnes Montfort, and his daughter, Linda Montfort Benson. Visitation will be held at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40205 on Monday, July 2 from 4-7PM, and Tuesday, July 3rd from 9a.m.-10a.m. services immediately following at Highlands Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Hosparus of Louisville or Fern Creek Baptist Church.
