Dearest Amy, Margaret, Elizabeth, Kate, and Julia, They did well, your Mom and Dad. I have many fond memories, but two specific images of your folks come to mind every time. It could be too hot for living things to move, but your Dad would be out in the garden watering vegetables, turning soil with a spade. One time he tossed me a just-picked tomato. I kinda' thought I had it but - big surprise - my catch was a squishy fail. Your Dad laughed and jokingly pointed the hose in my direction. Yeah, no; it was messy, but not quite hose-me-down messy, thank you very much. I remember how your Mom would divvy up vitamins and supplements so that you each had your doses, lined up by kid, waiting on the counter. If there were vitamins left untaken, she knew exactly who to call back to the kitchen before any of you went out the door. Your folks were mindful gardeners - they nurtured no weeds and produced no mean girls. Their girls were raised to be smart, conscientious, generous, kind, and unique individuals.
